Interview with the Intern: Jimin Lee

Every spring, Generator Design welcomes a graphic design student from St. Clair College here in Windsor-Essex. Sometimes, our interns come from far away, bringing with them opportunities for us to learn amazing cultural experiences. Our newest intern, Jimin Lee, has travelled from the other side of the world—what better way to learn about her than through a Generator-style interview!

Hi, Jimin! We’re happy to have you on our team. Where are you from?

Hello, I’m from South Korea! I’m really happy to be here.

South Korea has an inspiring culture! What inspires you?

Music inspires me; I always listen to music when I need new ideas. It motivates me to think, work out, and even get the laundry done. My favourite artists are Korean pop singers Yerin Baek and IU, plus Ariana Grande. Their voices always make me feel happy and creative.

Very cool! K-pop is a favourite of some of the Generator team. Speaking of feeling creative, if you were a colour, what colour would you be and why?

I would be my favourite colour, pastel purple/lilac. Since it makes me feel happy, I would want to be a person who makes people feel happy when they see me.

We’re definitely happy to have you, Jimin! So, what would you say is your favourite design software to work in?

I prefer to use InDesign. It was challenging to learn at first, but I’m comfortable with using it now.

InDesign is such an invaluable program to be familiar with. What area of graphic design do you currently feel you specialize in / want to specialize in?

I’m specializing in motion graphics and web design—two areas I’m always working to improve upon.

Those are great areas for every designer to continually learn about. Outside of graphic design, do you have any hobbies?

My hobby was baking when I was in Korea, but now I like to read books—I’m learning a lot!

Baking, you say? What’s your favourite food?

It really depends on the day and my mood, but I can always go for bolognese pasta.

What made you study to become a designer?

Back when I was nine, I wanted to be a fashion designer. After studying it at a design academy, I decided it wasn’t for me, so I started studying graphic design instead. I love what I’m learning!

What do you like most about living in Canada?

The thing I like most is that I can be myself. People don’t judge me by my appearance.

Now for a fun question: If you could be an animal, what animal would you be and how would it help you with being a graphic designer?

I think I would be a cat because cats are calm and sensitive; good qualities to help me to be a designer.

BONUS QUESTION:

Would you rather:

a) Design a project without a mouse.

b) Draw a picture blindfolded.

c) Write a blog with a pen that’s running out of ink.

d) Print flyers on a printer that jams every 10 sheets.

a) Design without a mouse—I’d use the trackpad instead!

Jimin is currently in her third year and on track to graduate with an advanced diploma in Graphic Design from St. Clair College. We’re happy to have you aboard the Generator Team, Jimin!
