I Ain’t Afraid of No Refresh
Who you gonna call? The furnace repairman, apparently because hell has surely frozen over! The Ghostbusters franchise unveiled its updated logo for the upcoming Netflix animated series and—gasp—the fans actually like it?
To commemorate the most important of days for the diehard fans of this legendary property: June 8th, Ghostbusters Day—Netflix in collaboration with Sony have revealed a fresh take on the classic logo, building anticipation for Ghostbusters: Night Shift, “an original animated series.”
The logo update sees the infamous ghost with a grimy makeover, combining halftone dots, Mike Mignola-style shadows, scribbled linework, and splatters of colour, giving the 40+ year-old innocent ghost we all know and love a beastly transformation. Have a look at that claw hand and tell me it’s not the terror dog? It looks so punk rock to me, like a Xeroxed flyer duct-taped to a hydro pole or pasted outside a dingy club: halftone dots, cut-and-paste graphics that turn a familiar image into something monstrous. It feels very DIY—the punk rock ethos.
What’s crazy to me is that so far (and it’s not like I scoured every square pixel of the internet) people seem to dig it, which is unusual for a property with such a rabid fanbase—the hardcore nerd, pop-culture enthusiast (like me) who always hate anything new or reformed because “they’re ruining my childhood!”
To that I say “simmer down, folks,” because we’re still at least a year and change away from seeing what Netflix has to offer here. All we have is a logo that suggests you’re going to see something new. In order for things to evolve, they need to be refreshed from time to time and that’s what happening here.
I’m on board for this new logo. It gets me excited about this upcoming show. I loved watching it as part of the Saturday morning cartoon line up on the floor with a bowl of Froot Loops. And what’s even better is that both of my kids love watching the old cartoon as well. So here I have something that meant so much to me as a child that’s about to be updated and brought into the 21st century—something new that I get to experience and enjoy with my kids. To me, that’s what it’s all about.
